As a natural wonder, the setting at Jeffreys’ Bay is indeed spectacular. The mix of world class waves along a variety of breaks, the beaches and marine life like the dolphins and whales certainly combine to make for an unforgettable experience for anyone. But most importantly it was the service provided by Jeffrey’s Bay Surf Trips that made my trip extremely special. Their service is outstanding and addresses the needs of all clients in a manner that is as engaging as it is professional. Shortly after my arrival I felt I was among friends and not merely a client of travel service and surf school. The surfing instruction definitely laid the foundation for reaching the next level. The surf school and accommodation are right on the surf breaks, which ensures easy access and opportunities for extra practice. Taking into account other features such as meal options and transport, Etienne and Robin, along with the rest of their team, have put together an excellent service with great value. Without a doubt I would recommend it to anyone.

Jordy Smith Goes Back-to-Back at Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, Parkinson Leads ASP World Title Race!!!!!!

Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, is all smiles after going back-to-back at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay.

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Sunday, July 24, 2011) – Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, has taken out the 2011 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in a hard-fought Final over Mick Fanning (AUS), 30, in front of the raucous and hardy hometown crowd on the beach and hundreds of thousands watching online.

Event No. 4 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Billabong Pro culminated in dramatic fashion today with “victory at sea”, three-to-four foot (1 – 1.5 metre) surf and the world’s best surfers displayed their comprehensive abilities to shred anything from yesterday’s perfection to today’s challenging conditions.

Smith continuously posted impressive scores throughout his Quarterfinal, Semfinal and Final heats, but it was his local knowledge that allowed his to select the best waves in the Final to overtake an in-form Fanning. The win was met with an eruption from those in attendance braving the harsh weather, and Smith was cheered up the beach to an emotional audience.

“It’s been an incredible week for me,” Smith said. “All the support of the people at Jeffreys Bay, Garth (Tarlow), Steve (Smith), my girlfriend Lyndall (Jarvis), my mom and dad and everyone else. It’s been a really special week for me and I’m so happy right now.”

Moving from 5th to 2nd on the ASP World Title rankings, the young South African is now firmly in the hunt and will utilize the confidence attained today to propel him through the latter half of the year.

“Mick (Fanning) has surfed amazing all week,” Smith said. “He’s always an inspiration and he’s right there with everyone in the hunt for the title. Today’s a huge win for me. Last year, it was very emotional. To back it up this year just feels really, really good. It’s huge for my confidence and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Fanning, who claimed the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in 2002 and 2006, appeared to find his form this morning, dusting Gold Coast flyboy Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, and Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, en route his Runner-Up finish. Today’s placing sees Fanning move from 8th to 4th on the ASP World Title Rankings.

“It was really difficult out there today,” Fanning said. “Three heats yesterday and three heats today and felt like the arms wanted to fall off. Big congratulations to Jordy (Smith) though. It was great surfing. It’s inspirational stuff and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Parkinson, 2008 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay winner, was in sensational form this year, consistently notching up high scores throughout the event before falling to a rampaging Fanning in the Semifinals.

“The conditions are a bit tedious today but every now and then there’s a good wave,” Parkinson said. “Everyone is in the same boat too – we all have to deal with it. Shame I couldn’t find the same rhythm that Mick (Fanning) did out there, but that’s how it goes sometimes.”

With his Equal 3rd finish, Parkinson ascends to the frontrunner position in the hunt for the 2011 ASP World Title, but the perennial threat remains cautious when regarding the remainder of the season.

“I don’t really think about that yet,” Parkinson said. “It’s only the fourth event of the year and I’ve been in this position before. I’m happy with my surfing and my boards and I’ll keep my eyes on the next heat.”

Adrian Buchan (AUS), 28, former No. 17 on the ASP World Title rankings, led the goofy-footed assault on Jeffreys Bay throughout the event and his Equal 3rd place finish today moves the Australian up to 11th heading into the next event in Tahiti.

“I missed a good one at the start and that really let Jordy (Smith) get on top early in the heat,” Buchan said. “I always felt like I could come back but it just didn’t happen for me. It’s still an excellent result for me and I’m excited about the next few events.”

Alejo Muniz (BRA), 21, 2011 ASP Dream Tour rookie, matched his best result of the year with and Equal 5th place finish. Muniz now sits well inside the cutoff for the ASP Top 34 rotation in August, and will remain a fixture at the elite level throughout the duration of the season.

“I never thought I would have good results in my rookie year,” Muniz said. “I am surfing with my heroes and to be getting through heats is what I always dreamed of as a little kid. This matches my best result this year from the Gold Coast and I’m stoked to be safe for the August cutoff.”

Muniz, along with fellow rookie Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, both finished Equal 5th at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay.

Billabong Pro J-Bay – how it all began back in the days..

After starting life as the Beach Hotel Classic, the surfing event at Jeffreys Bay was upgraded to World Tour status in 1984, and with it came the sudden attention of the surfing world as Supertubes delivered four days of incredible 8 – 10 foot surf.

The event was not run in 1985 and 1986, but by 1987 it was back on track as the Billabong / Country Feeling J-Bay Surf Classic. In 1991, the Surf Classic was followed by the one-off Country Feeling Dream Sequence with Luke Egan (Aus) earning himself a prime Jeffreys Bay plot of land for his victory. In 1993 the contest was upgraded to an ASP World Qualifying Series for the first time.

How it all began- the Beach Hotel Classic

1996 started in small waves and, for the first time in the 12 year history of the event, had to be moved up to Boneyards. However, by noon the swell was picking up and 8 foot waves were being ridden at Supertubes with World Champ, Kelly slater going on to win the event, which by now had been upgraded to its current Status of a World Championship Tour event.
The withdrawal of CSI as a co-sponsor in 1997 led to the demise of the WCT event replaced by the 13th Billabong Country Feeling Surf Classic. The 1999 event was the year of the wildcard, with Sean Holmes scoring the highest points of round one before 19 year-old Joel Parkinson (Aus) recorded a spectacular maiden WCT victory.

The first 2 events of the new millennium again produced outstanding surfing resulting in Jake Paterson recording back-to-back victories.
The introduction of the VonZipper Trials in 2002 enabled local standout Sean Holmes to earn a wildcard, eliminating eventual 2002 world champ Andy Irons (Haw) to finish 5th overall.
The 2003 event will remain forever etched in the memory banks of all who witnessed it. The then six-time world champ Kelly Slater, seized the opportunity presented by the early exit of runaway ratings leader Andy Irons to clinch a famous victory with some of the best surfing ever seen.

In 2004, after finally gaining the upper hand over uber-wildcard Sean Holmes, Andy Irons crowned a spectacular victory with a perfect 10 point ride in the final over Nathan Hedge (Aus).
The 2005 edition produced the most dramatic finish in the long and esteemed history of the event. On the final day of the waiting period, in rising 8 foot surf and needing a 9.23 point ride to overtake Andy Irons, Kelly Slater scored a wave 30 seconds before the final siren that the judges rewarded with 9.5, giving the Floridian a famous victory.

A slow start to the 2006 event with numerous lay-days culminated in an epic finale when Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow went head-to-head in excellent 4-6 foot surf with Mick eventually taking the title
2007 saw Taj Burrow finally claim his maiden victory at J-Bay while 2008 saw current 10 time world champ, Kelly Slater clinch another Billabong Pro title at J’Bay. In 2009, Joel Parkinson demolished the field to secure his second Billabong Pro victory, ten years after winning it as a 19 year old wildcard.

That brings us to last year, when years of local anticipation were finally fulfilled by SA prodigy; Jordy Smith, who blasted through the field to claim his maiden Word Tour victory on home soil in front of thousands of ‘vuvuzela’ wielding fans!

World’s top 32 ranked surfers in Jeffreys Bay for Billabong Pro in July

All 32 of the world’s top ranked professional surfers will be in Jeffreys Bay in July for the R3 million Billabong Pro J-Bay 2011, Africa’s only stop on the ASP World Tour, the 11-event series of events that determines surfing’s annual men’s world champion.

Scheduled for 14-24 July, the 26^th edition of the continent’s most prestigious surfing event will again be staged at Supertubes, the 300 metre stretch of coastline universally acknowledged as one of the planet’s top 10 high performance surf breaks.

The stellar field for the 2011 Billabong Pro J-Bay, arguably the most talented group of surfers ever assembled, includes 10-time and reigning ASP world Champion Kelly Slater (USA); South African superstar and defending event champion, Jordy Smith; former two-time world and event champion Mick Fanning (AUS) and previous Billabong Pro J-Bay champions Joel Parkinson and Taj Burrow (both Australians).

Throw in the progressive manoeuvres of Dane Reynolds (USA), the precocious talents of Owen Wright (AUS), Michel Bourez (TAH) and 2010 runner-up Adam Melling (AUS), add established stars like current ASP World Tour No. 1 ranked Adriano de Souza (BRA), the Hobgood twins – 2000 world champion CJ and 2009 J-Bay runner-up Damien – along with fellow American Bobby Martinez and spectacular surfing performances are guaranteed to light up the waves at Supers.

The 36 man field also includes South Africa’s ‘uber-wildcard’ Sean Holmes (Cape Town), conqueror of both Slater and the late Andy Irons (HAW) on his way to fifth place last year. Holmes’ uncanny affinity with the waves at Supertubes has wrecked the title hopes of so many of the top contenders over the years.

The second wildcard goes to the winner of the VonZipper Superheat, a five-man encounter held on the first day of the event featuring South African rising stars Shaun Joubert (Mossel Bay) and Dale Staples (St Francis Bay); international contenders Granger Larson (HAW) and reigning ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (AUS) along with Shaun Payne (St Francis Bay), winner of the Xcel Pro Showdown at Supers.

This year sees three days of major underground music talent coinciding with the world-class surfing action. The Billabong Pro Music Festival runs Friday to Sunday, 15 to 17 July, at the Jolly Dolphin featuring a lineup of 14 top SA bands including the likes of Aking, City Bowl Mizers, P.H.Fat, Jack Parow and the ever-popular local Hot Wasabi band fronted by the legendary Steve Walsh.

Building on the programs instituted over the past two years, the estimated 384.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions generated by the event activities, including the travel by local and international participants and officials, will be reduced wherever possible. The remaining emissions will be offset using United Nations Kyoto compliant carbon credits ensuring a low carbon, climate-conscious event and that the barrels ridden at Supers are green in more ways than one.

Greening initiatives at the event include using renewable energy, biodegradable food and beverage containers, paper instead of plastic bags and bio-diesel fuel in event vehicles where possible alongside an event recycling program. The eyes of the surfing world will be firmly fixed on Jeffreys Bay from 14-24 July as hundreds of thousands of surf fans worldwide log millions of page impressions while following the fortunes of their favourite surfers.

Shaun Payne wins 2011 Xcel J-Bay Pro

The Xcel Pro was run off in excellent conditions at Supertubes yesterday on only the second day of a month long waiting period.
Good 4 -6 foot waves poured down the point for the stoked local surfers, who all managed to get a couple of great rides during the course of the event.

Round one and the quarter-finals saw some fast surfing on the long walls of Supers, with Warren Dean a stand-out, blasting along with the best of them, and easily winning through to the semis.
Semi number one saw a repeat of the Xcel Pro 2009 final heat, with two-times winner Ryan Payne coming up against, and defeating Dean with some power surfing.
The second semi was a clash of the new blood, with Shaun Payne and Nick Godfrey, both first time invitees into the event, battling it out on the perfect Supers walls. Despite Nick showing good form all morning, Shaun went to town on one wave and scored the only 10-point ride of the event, and in the process eliminating Nick from the event.

The final heat between the two brothers saw Shaun and Ryan both going head to head in the slightly smaller surf. The lead went back and forth a few times as both natural footers pushed it as hard as they could, both determined to win. At the end of the day it was younger brother Shaun who was the surfer to break brother Ryan’s stranglehold on the title, with Ryan having won both the events in the past.
“So stoked to have won the contest,” said a pleased and champagne-drenched Shaun, clutching his trophy. “It’s such a good event and I was lucky to be invited this year. The waves were pumping, and it’s great to see all the local support.”

For his victory, Shaun won a coveted slot into the VonZipper Superheat, the trials heat for the Billabong Pro World Tour event, set to take place at Jeffrey’s Bay later in the year. He also banked R10k for his win, and received a Nixon 51-30 PU Tide watch, valued at R4,500.
Second placed Ryan took home a Sector9 Skateboard and a Xcel Drylock Wetsuit valued at R4,500 for his day’s work.
Shaun also took home an extra R5,000, presented by Island Pacific for the Wave Of The Day, while the R5,000 prize presented by Island Pacific for Best Junior Surfer went to a deserving Dylan Lightfoot.
FireWire Surfboards awarded a surfboard to Lyle Meek for Best Turn Of The Contest, as well as one to Warren Dean for Best Barrel Of The Contest.

The much-anticipated list of invited surfers for this event has been released, with a few surprises and a few regulars in the mix.
The contest organisers of this popular event have kept it consistent, with local rippers and underground chargers, as well as local groms comprising the core of invited surfers. The start of the waiting period, the month of June, is fast approaching, and these surfers are all in Supers training in order to get a shot at the title.

Two-times winner Ryan Payne is in the thick of it again this year, hoping for a hat-trick of wins. One surfer who will be doing his utmost to beat Ryan and have a shot at victory will be his brother and first-time invitee Shaun Payne. Shaun has been one of the stand-outs duing the recent swells at Supers and his performances havent gone unnoticed. “Shaun has been surfing really good during the last few swells,” said contest director Koffie Jacobs. “He deserves a spot in the event.”
Regular invitees include last year’s stand-out surfer Remi Peterson, tube specialist Deon Lategan and perennial Supers charger Warren Dean. Others include Bertie Stuurman, Dale Staples and Stanley Badger, with the goofy-footers led by Lyle Meek, Stuart Shelver and Craig Els. The grom brigade are once again represented by the local duo of Steven Sawyer and Dylan Lightfoot, and Supers resident Ari Kraak once again gets the nod.
Another new face is Dan Thornton, who has been surfing excellently all year and is a worthy recipient of a slot. “Dan has been a real stand-out this year and his surfing has really shone recently,” said Jacobs. “He could do well at Supers and easily cause an upset or two when the waves are cooking.” Supertubes is a special wave that needs to be ridden in a unique way, and all 16 of the invitees have paid their dues in the line up and are capable of scoring excellent rides.
Once again the judges will be presided over by Mike Ginsberg, a former World Tour judge, a Supers surfer and a Jeffrey’s Bay resident. From a judges point of view Ginzy understands the waves at Supers like few others, and can ascertain what constitutes a critical turn or a deep barrel, and score the surfers accordingly. Ginzy has been spot-on with the results in the last two events and the judging is thus in safe hands.

This year the alternates for the event are Nick Godfrey, Pablo Thysman and Daniel Jeggels. With the contest waiting period being a month long, and with most of the invited surfers holding down full-time jobs in the community, there is always a very good chance that some of the alternates will get a start in the event on the day.

The winner of the Xcel Pro gets a slot into the VonZipper Superheat, the pre-event trials heat of the Billabong Pro. A win in the VonZipper Superheat sees that surfer with a spot in the main event. The handing over of colours and blazers for the 2011 SA Team took place at the St Francis Resort on Saturday evening. Robin De Dock was master of ceremonies.
A new tradition was introduced this year with the ceremony of sands. 30 teams from all over the world that attend the world games must bring with them some local beach sand, which all gets mingled together to signify the uniting of all these lands.

In the photo is Etienne Venter, Steven Sawyer and Dylan Lightfoot who received their South African colours for the second time and a new member to the team, Emma Smith with Grahams Hynes, one of the greatest coaches in South African surf history.
Robin De Kock invited many of the old SA Team members from years gone by and it was great to see Johnny Paarman in the crowd and Ant Brodovich.
The team leaves for Peru this morning.

After a great start to the winter, Supertubes is once again getting ready to host the specialty surfing event – the Xcel Pro Showdown At Supertubes. The last two years has seen excellent events being run off, and this year sees a shake up with regards format, invitees and media output. The 2011 version of the Xcel Pro will once again have Zigzag Surfing Magazine as their exclusive media partner.

Supers delivered the goods in the 2010 Xcel Pro

This year the waiting period is the month of June. Only one day is needed to run the event, and historically June is one of the best months for swell and offshore winds. The last two events have seen ridiculous waves with high performance surfing and incredible tube riding the order of the day.
This year the Xcel Pro is an invite only club event, with a selection of Supertubes specialists and locals invited to compete in the event. The contest organisers choose surfers from the local community, from young to old, professional to blue collar, who just happen to surf Supertubes exceptionally well, and spend time in the water whenever the waves are breaking.
“It has been quite a good start to the winter in terms of waves and conditions so far,” said contest director Koffie Jacobs. “Supers will most definitely turn on for another day of perfect barrels. It is a great event to watch, and one of the surfers will gain entry into the VonZipper Superheat along with a bunch of other prizes, so the surfers have nothing to lose.”

In the last two years of the event, there has only been one winner, Ryan Payne. A top Supertubes surfer, Ryan has fought some close battles but has come out victorious both times. This year could see Ryan with a hat trick of wins, but either way it won’t be easy, with the likes of Warren Dean showing phenomenal form over the last few weeks, as well as junior surfers like Remi Peterson and tuberiding specialists like Deon Lategan in the mix. The winner of the Xcel Pro gets entry into the VonZipper Superheat, a trials heat for the Billabong Pro, as well as a Nixon amongst other prizes.
“Of course I am chomping at the bit for the Xcel Pro event,” said Payne. “It’s the one event I look forward to each year since it started. I mean, who wouldn’t want to have firing Supers to themselves along with three mates in the water all day?

“There are cab companies in town so rather be safe than sorry. Just remember that you also have to security conscious in J’Bay just like anywhere else in South Africa so please lock doors and secure windows when going to bed.

New Vision for J’Bay Tourism

Jeffreys Bay depends on tourism for its very survival. Surfers have been coming here for years, seeking to ride the prefect waves that break down the point at Supertubes and will continue to flock to J’Bay from all over the globe as long as the waves keep on breaking.
The December holiday makers will also continue to keep Jeffreys Bay as their preferred holiday destination as the annual pilgrimage to the town has become a family tradition and many of them now own holiday houses or have ended up living here on a permanent basis.

Jeffreys Bay is an internationally recognised tourist destination.

Yet these visitors are not enough to keep the wheels of Jeffreys Bay economy turning and the survival of many businesses in the town depends on increasing the number of tourists, both foreign and local, who visit the town.
Jeffreys Bay Tourism has identified this need and will be focusing their efforts in bringing more tourists to town.
“J’Bay will be promoted as a centralised destination from which tourists can explore the Kouga and other nearby attractions like Addo Elephant Park”, said newly elected Chairman of Tourism, Andy Thysman.
“The Khoisan Heritage sites in the area will also be promoted as major tourist attractions and we are already at work setting up cultural heritage tours that will include things liked the ancient fish traps along the coastline.”

The first house in Jeffreys Bay was aptly named the "White House".

The new Board of Directors are also busy with an upgrade of the Tourism office in Da Gama Road and will be busy training the office staff as well as getting them work uniforms.
Other initiatives are positioning Jeffreys Bay Tourism in social media and a new face book page called Jeffreys Bay Tourism has been created to further promote the town.
Wall plaques have been ordered that will feature the businesses that are members of Jeffreys Bay Tourism and will be visible on the walls of the office. This is to ensure that all members have a footprint in the office.
“I am only the driver of the bus and without fuel, a bus cannot go anywhere”, added Thysman. “I urge all members and those who want to join Tourism to pay their membership fees and commissions so that we can start taking Tourism forward once again”.
A Tourism “open day” is being planned once the office upgrade is complete and the town will be given more information about this event closer to the time.

South Africa’s best surfer Jordy Smith visited the 2011 SA Junior Surfing Team during their training camp at the Sports Science Institute in Newlands over the weekend and spent time talking to the team members about where it all started for him.

The 2011 SA Junior Team were at their first training camp as part of their preparations for the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships which take place in Punta Hermosa, Peru from 21 – 29 May.
Jordy outlined what the young South African team needed to do to get to the top and told them that he was confident that they would do South Africa proud in Peru.
Smith, currently the ASP World No. 2 ranked surfer, started his illustrious career representing South Africa at the age of 14. He competed for South Africa in Durban in the 2003 ISA World Junior Championships where he won gold medal in the Under 16 Division.

In 2005 he reached the Under 18 final at the ISA World Junior championships in California and won a silver medal in the Under 18 Division in Brazil in 2006. Later that year he won World Championship title at the ISA World Games in California.
Since joining the World Tour Smith has made a huge impression, qualifying for the World Championship Tour by a record margin in his first year and winning the Hawaiian Triple Crown Rookie of the Year title in 2008.
He won both the Mr Price Pro and the Billabong Pro J’Bay in 2010 and finishing the year as the runner up to 10-time World Champion Kelly Slater.

Blue Crush 2 – the wait is over

The Hollywood blockbuster Blue Crush 2 is set for a June 2011 release. The film features Jeffreys Bay quite prominently as scenes from the movie were shot at Supertubes, Lower Point and other venues in the town.

The Blue Crush bus was a familiar sight in Jeffreys Bay while filming took place. Local wave rider,Wayne De Lange was involved with a lot of the water footage that needed to be filmed.

Supetubes was a Hollywood set during filming of Blue crush 2. That didn't prevent local Warren Dean from getting his waves.

East London surfer Rosie Hodge is the double for the lead role played by Sasha Jackson in the movie and all the actual surfing is performed by the Queensberry Point local.

3 J’Bay surfers in National Sa Springbok team!

The Board of Directors of Surfing South Africa has ratified the 2011 SA Junior Surfing Team which will compete in the 2010 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships in Peru from May 21 to 29, 2011.

The team was chosen after competing in two trials at Cape St Francis in December last year and in the first week of February.
Steven Sawyer has been selected in the U/18 division and this is the second year in a row that the J’Bay backhander has earned his national colours.

Emma Smith will make her debut for the SA Juniors in Peru after having a great season in the competitive surf arena in 2010. Emma represented South Africa in a contest in Reunion Island last year as well.

Current Under 16 SA Champion Dylan Lightfoot will head up his age group and will be keen on making hos presence felt on the international stage after a good showing in a Junior Pro event in Australia. Lightfoot earns his second cap in 2011.

The J’Bay trio will be joined by Tobias Schroeder who has been selected to surf for Germany and will be up against his surfing mates from the beaches of Jeffreys Bay.
Surfing South Africa President Mark Hoffman has been appointed team manager with Theo Van Wyk the assistant manager. The coaches are Quintin Jones and Llewellyn Whittaker. The team will be involved in several training camps before departing for Punta Hermosa, near Lima, Peru in mid-May.

Tobias Schroeder will be surfing for Germany.

As a final preparation to the tournament the South Africans will defend the Lotto SANZ Trophy in the traditional SANZ Challenge against New Zealand at Punta Hermosa two days before the World Championships gets under way. The ninth edition of this friendly encounter sees the two teams competing for a unique trophy made from semi precious New Zealand stone and South African yellow wood. The trophy was first presented in Durban in 2003 and is currently held by South Africa.
Over 30 countries from five continents are set to attend the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships. The teams will be competing at the same venue where the ISA World Games were held last year.
The annual tournament determines the World Junior Team Champions, the World Junior ISA Tag Team Champions and medalists in the Under 18 Boys and Girls and Under 16 Boys divisions.

Well known surfer, artist and environmentalist Deon Lategan has won $ 2000 in the Billabong/Zigzag Supertubes One Shot photo competition. The winner’s photo will be used in the 2011 Billabong Pro marketing material, in addition to the prize money.
Deon, who has been an avid photographer for years, came up with the photo that in the eyes of the judges captured the essence of surfing Supertubes.

“It’s always been a goal of mine to get the Billabong Pro campaign shot. It’s something that I thought I had a decent chance at getting so I’m super stoked”, said Deon.
When asked about the photo, Deon said, “I was doing my surf check and this perfect set came through which is the one featured in this photo. I literally took this shot and then ran up the beach to ask Koffie Jacobs, the contest director of the Xcel Po if there was time for a pre contest surf as the Xcel was due to start the same day. I had an epic morning surf and then later on had a dream heat in the contest where I scragged some sweet waves. All round a perfect day”.

Jaconi Comley's photo of Andy Irons has a timeless feel to it.

Some other J’Bay locals also produced some great pictures with Jaconi Comley snapping a classic of Andy Irons in the barrel. Jaconi’s photo was rated as one of the most popular during the Supertubes One Shot competition.
Heleen Bakkes, another local also produced a fine action shot as can be seen below. The chokka fisherman supported the anti nuclear demonstration during the 2010 Billabong Pro and many brought their boats close in shore during the contest.

Kelly Slater Clinches Historic 10th ASP World Title in Puerto Rico

Source: Surfersvillage Global Surf News, - - Somewhere, Porta Del Sol/Puerto Rico (Saturday, November 6, 2010) – Kelly Slater (USA), 38, has made sporting history today, claiming an unprecedented 10 th ASP World Title at Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico.

With his advancement out of the Quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico over Adriano de Souza (BRA), 23, Slater amassed enough points to move out of reach remaining contender Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, and collect the 2010 ASP World Title, culminating a 20-year effort.

“I don’t know, it just happened,” Slater said. “If you look at the heat, Adriano (De Souza) passed one up and let me have it and that was a good wave and that was pretty much it a few minutes into the heat. I just want to send my condolences to Irons family. It’s been a week of extremes for me. If it wasn’t for Andy (Irons) there is no way I’d be here in this position right now. I don’t really know what else to say, I’m a little overwhelmed right now. I want to dedicate this to Andy and to my family.”

Andy Irons (HAW), 32, former three-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World Tour competitor, tragically passed away last Tuesday in transit back home from Puerto Rico. The iconic Hawaiian’s unexpected passing has been a devastating blow to the international sporting community.

“I had the 3rd at Teahupoo and Jordy got the 17th, at the time I really wanted to win that event and pull into the lead, but having Andy (Irons) win that contest was really special,” Slater said. “I surfed a last heat with him this year and to get past everybody at Trestles, I know the level is pretty much going through the roof every year. The stuff that Dane (Reynolds) and Jordy (Smith) pull off at every event, everyone is trying to catch on and their strike rate is so high, their consistency is so high. When I got into the lead after Trestles, I didn’t really feel that confident going into France. It was a wave-catching contest at first, but then it got big and I thought ‘this is my zone, this is where I do well and this is what I love.’ The points all started coming together just right for me. To get past Jordy (Smith) in the Final in Portugal, I knew something special was happening.”

“I decided to go for 10 (ASP World Titles) when a friend asked me if I’d decided to win 10 yet after a few contests into this year,” Slater said. “I told him ‘yeah, okay.’ That was right before Brazil. At that point I knew I could do it, but Taj (Burrow) looked good to start the year, but to me it looked like Jordy (Smith) was the guy early on. Mick (Fanning) had a lot of ninths and he knows he’s not going to win a title with ninths. Besides Jordy’s 17th, his worst result was the Quarters, so I knew there was no room for error. These last five events have really come together. I don’t really know how it came together the way it did.”

Slater, who spent a large portion of his youth in Puerto Rico, had a huge support crew of family and friends on hand to witness the incredible feat as well as the support of the tens of thousands in attendance on the beach.

“It’s nice to win this in Puerto Rico with my friends and family here,” Slater said. “I haven’t been surfing here on this part of the island since ’88 and I used to come here a lot. This was like a second home to me. It was like my little Hawaii. I used to come here in the winter and I have a lot of good friends from here. It’s the closest event ever to my home, so it feels like home.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Tuesday, November 2, 2010) – Andy Irons (HAW), 32, three-time ASP World Champion, passed away today en-route from Puerto Rico back home to Kauai from complications due to illness.

Official Irons Family Statement:

The world of surfing mourns an incredibly sad loss today with the news that Hawaii’s Andy Irons has died. Andy was a beloved husband, and a true champion.

Irons, 32, withdrew from a professional surfing event in Puerto Rico last weekend due to illness, and passed away during a layover en-route to his home in Kauai, Hawaii. He had reportedly been battling with Dengue Fever, a viral disease.
At this time the family thanks his friends and fans for their support, and asks that the community respect its privacy. The family also asks to not be contacted so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss.

Irons, who began his career with the elite ASP World Tour in 1998, went on to collect 20 elite tour victories, four Triple Crown of Surfing Titles, three consecutive ASP World Titles and change the sport forever with his unparalleled ability and comprehensive approach to surfing.

The thoughts and sympathies of the ASP family go out to the Irons family as the entire sporting world mourns this tragedy.

Supertubes Foundation leads the Recycling effort in J’Bay

17 September is National Recycling Day and the environmental body the Supertubes Surfing Foundation will be celebrating in the Supertubes Park.
Recycled bottle tops and wire have been used to form words “Save Water” on the razor wire protected the last remaining sand dune along the Jeffreys Bay beach front.

The Foundation set up recycling bins in the Park which are working well as residents become informed and start to separate their refuse.
According to Alison Kuhl from the Supertubes Foundation residents can do the following “At present clean tins, plastic bottles, paper (not newspaper and magazines) uncoated cardboard and glass may be dropped off at the Park. Bins are available and Enviroman collects from the Park on a daily basis.”

According to the University of Johannesburg:
Recycling one ton of paper saves:
17 trees
2 barrels of oil
4 100 kW of energy
27,2 kg of air pollution.
Recycling aluminium drink cans saves 95 % of the energy needed to make aluminium for its raw materials.
Incinerating 10 000 tons of waste creates 1 job , land filling the same amount creates 6 jobs while recycling the same 10 000 creates 36 jobs.
Recycling a glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for four hours.
Let’s make a difference and get the recycling ethic going in Jeffreys Bay.

With huge support from the packed beach ,local favourite Jordy Smith won the 2010 Jeffreys Bay Billabong Pro in 2-3 ft waves at Supertubes.
Overcoming a jittery display in the semi final, Jordy cuaght the first wave of the final and shredded it down the point. World Tour rookie Adam Melling never had a look in and Jordy kept a stranglehold on proceeding to win his first ever ASP title.

Smith is also the number one ranked surfer in the world afer overtaking Kelly Slater who was defeated by fellow South African Sean Holmes in round 3.
The beach erupted afer the final siren, with an outpouring of patriotism as Jordy was carried up the beach. The “gees” is alive and well in South Africa, and just to crown it, today is Nelson Mandela’s birthday too.

Jordy Smith heads ASP World Title Race 2010 Rankings after Round 4 victory at Billabong Pro J-Bay!!!!!!!!!!

Jordy Smith moved into the lead in the 2010 ASP World Title Race Rankings when he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro J-Bay by defeating dangerous rookie Owen Wright (AUS) in Round 4 at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay today.

The 22 year-old Durbanite, ranked No. 2 coming into the only ASP World Tour event to be staged in Africa, overtook 9 x ASP World Champion Kelly Slater, who was earlier ousted from the event by wildcard Sean Holmes in Round 3, to become the first South African surfer to head the rankings that determine the annual ASP World Title since SA surfing legend Shaun Tomson back in the 1980’s.

“That’s cool but there’s still a long way to go,” Smith cautioned when informed that he had moved to No. 1. “Kelly (Slater) may have lost today but he won’t be out of the title race until the hooter sounds at Pipe at the end of the year. Still, it’s a great position for me to be in and I’ll look to consolidate with a solid result here at Jeffreys.”

Smith upped his game today, weaving in and out of the hollow sections on the head-high waves and punctuating his rides with a varied repertoire of new-school manoeuvres that earned a massive 17.87 out of 20 point heat tally, including 9.27 on one wave. Wright, 19, whose dynamic surfing in his first visit to Supertubes has been really impressive, answered back with a pair of high seven point scores of his own but was left needing a near-perfect 9.94 out of 10 when the siren sounded to end the heat.

“Owen (Wright) has had the best backhand out here all event,” Smith commented on the heat. “I knew I had to get a jump on him early and was fortunate that there were plenty of waves in that heat. I opened with an average one before I got that 8.60, but Owen was right there with a high 7 so it was tight all the way through. Then he let me go on that one where he had priority and it turned into my best wave and allowed me to put in a variety of manoeuvres.”

Meanwhile Holmes, who caused the upset of the event by eliminating Slater, continued his giant-killing momentum in Round 4 by defeating former 3 x ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) in Round 4. Despite surfing at only 60% of his capabilities due to a back injury, Holmes’ uncanny affinity with the Supertubes lineup enabled him to slot into a deep tube ride that gave him the heat lead with 2 minutes remaining and ultimately to join Smith in the quarters..

The Capetonian, who earned the nickname “The Nemesis” after eliminating then ASP World Champion Irons twice in successive years in the early 2000’s, raised the match-up ratio to 3-1 when the Hawaiian came up short on the final ride of the encounter, only earning 7.0 points when needing 7.77 to advance.

“I’m stoked to get through but I’m a little bummed for Andy (Irons),” Holmes said. “He and I are very good friends, and he’s just so fired up at the moment and wants to do well. He’s been surfing well but seems like he’s having a tough year. I’m sure he’ll sort it out in Tahiti though. Happy to get through another one and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

Contest director Mike Parsons completed Round 3 and all but the eighth and final heat of Round 4 during the third successive day of outstanding surfing at Jeffreys Bay as the world’s best surfers raised their performance levels at the business end of Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour..

The quarterfinal lineup sees Smith first up against Brazilian Adriano de Souza (BRA), who was ranked No. 8 before J-Bay and dispatched Adrian ‘Ace’ Buchan (AUS) with his trademark seamless combination of carving moves. Holmes then takes on perennial ASP top 5 finisher Bede Durbidge (AUS) in the second quarterfinal.

The bottom half of the draw comprises arguably the pick of the quarters when Taj Burrow (AUS) clashes with progressive surfing standout Dane Reynolds (USA). Burrow, the World No. 3, sits just 250 points behind Smith in the rankings and was the form surfer today.

The 2007 Billabong Pro J-Bay winner amassed an incredible 18.87 point heat total, made up of rides of 9.77 and 9.10 points, which elevated him into pole position in the Nixon WTA and the US $10 000 one-of-a-kind Nixon timepiece that goes to the surfer producing the highest heat tally at Jeffreys Bay.

“I’m feeling better with each heat,” Burrow said. “It certainly helps with the ratings and makes things interesting. There’s been some big upsets, but at the end of the day, I just want to surf to my best out in the heat. I feel like I’m working my way towards it and I just want to perform at my best.”

In the fourth quarter, last year’s event runner-up, Damien Hobgood (USA), who caused a another major upset by eliminating reigning ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, in the final heat of the day, will be matched with the winner of the remaining Round 4 heat that features an all rookie lineup of Adam Melling (AUS) versus Dusty Payne (HAW).

Organisers are left with just another eight heats, totaling approximately 4.5 hours of competition, to determine the 2010 Billabong Pro J-Bay champion and will decide on when to restart the event at 7am on Sunday morning. Surfline, the official surf forecasters for the event, predict that the SSW swell will drop through the day on Sunday, with the largest waves showing in the morning.

SA’s Sean Holmes eliminates World No. 1 Kelly Slater from Billabong Pro J-Bay!!!!!

South African wildcard Sean Holmes added another scalp to his storied list of giant-killing acts at the Billabong Pro J-Bay when he eliminated current World No. 1 and 9 x ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) from the event in a massive result that has reverberated throughout the ASP World Tour.

Holmes, competing with a back injury incurred on Day 1 of the event that has required extensive physiotherapy and pain-killing injections, waited patiently for the best waves during the 30-minute Round 3 clash before scoring the narrowest of victories over the former four-time J-Bay champion, securing his place in the last 16 by just four-hundredths of a point – 13.10 vs. 13.06 – out of a possible 20.

“I’m definitely feeling a lot of pain in my lower back and am very stiff so I entered the heat knowing that I was going to have to surf smart,” Holmes, 32, from Cape Town explained. “I focused on getting the biggest waves I could and applying as much power as I could.”

“Kelly (Slater) and I have surfed once before out here when it was a bit smaller and he got me by taking off on a lot of insiders. There wasn’t as much opportunity out there today so being selective played a big role.”

Both surfers rode waves in the final minute and Slater, needing just 5.51 to snatch victory, produced a potentially heat-winning ride of 7.23. The judges kept the packed beach on tenterhooks for two minutes after the heat-ending siren had sounded before awarding Holmes 5.77 points and a berth in Round 4 to a roar of patriotic elation.

In his next clash Holmes takes on former 3 x ASP World Champion Andy Irons in a continuation of their long-standing rivalry in which the South African holds the upper-hand with two victories to the Hawaiian’s one.

“Andy (Irons) and I are great friends now so any rivalry that we may have had I don’t think exists anymore,” Holmes commented on his next encounter. “He’s a fantastic surfer and I don’t think he even thinks about who he has in a heat. He just goes out there and does his thing. It will be a fun heat.”

The result has sent shock-waves through the 2010 ASP World Title Race as Slater’s early exit at J-Bay opens the door for a number of the top contenders to take over the No. 1 ranking after this event. The biggest beneficiary could be SA’s Jordy Smith who came into the event ranked No. 2, but the likes of Taj Burrow, fellow Australian and reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning, Bobby Martinez (USA) and the rest of the top 10 will be eyeing the opportunity to improve their standings with a good result here.

Slater, who only arrived in Jeffreys Bay at 10am on the opening day of the event on Thursday after a 40 hour, weather delayed trip from the USA, was complimentary of Holmes’ performance and philosophical about the defeat and the rest of the year.

“I never felt in sync here this year,” Slater said. “I’ve been tired ever since I arrived. I’ve been going to bed at 8pm and waking up at 1am. I’ve been up today for 8 hours already. That said, Sean is always in sync out here at Jeffreys. He knows the spot really well and is always on the best waves.”

“It’s a long year ahead. I think I entered this event two or three heats ahead of Jordy (Smith) and if he wins this event, he’ll be two or three heats ahead of me. So I’ve got a month to think about it before the next one. I’ll go home, recharge and focus on Tahiti.”

For the third consecutive day, the Billabong Pro J-Bay started at 7.30am in clean offshore winds. However today’s small one metre waves come from an unusual ESE direction generated by a weather system in the Indian Ocean below Madagascar, forcing the competitors to start their rides halfway down the famed Supertubes point. The predicted new swell from the traditional SSW direction has started to appear and organisers expect the waves to rise to overhead through the day and have scheduled completing Round 3 and at least the first four heats of Round 4 before nightfall.

Jordy Smith charges into last 16 at Billabong Pro J-Bay!!!!

South African surf star and current World No. 2 Jordy Smith made his legions of local fans happy by powering into the last 16 in the US $400 000 (approx. R3 million) Billabong Pro J-Bay, Africa’s most prestigious surfing event, at Jeffreys Bay on Friday.

Smith produced a consummate display of high performance surfing in the last heat of the day to dispatch dangerous rookie Nate Yeomans (USA) from the event. Using his extensive knowledge of the waves at Supertubes, and the help of his advisers on the dunes, the 22 year-old Durbanite selected the best waves early in the encounter and compiled a winning total by the halfway mark of the 30 minute heat held in glassy but inconsistent one metre waves.

Smith then clinched victory by establishing priority, outstripping the American in a 60 metre paddle-battle to be the first back to the lineup, and used this tactical advantage to see out the remaining time with his opponent needing to replace both his top scores to advance.

Smith faces a tough encounter in Round 4 against 19 year-old rookie Owen Wright who has impressed everyone with his dynamic brand of backhand surfing in his first visit to Supertubes. The lanky 19 year-old has more than justified his billing as Australia’s next ASP World Title challenger and seems able to string together the combinations of progressive manoeuvres that net scores in the excellent range, between 8 and 10 points, on virtually any wave he catches.

Today’s smaller but flawless conditions provided the canvas for several exceptional rides. Australian Jay Thompson was awarded the first perfect 10 point score of the tournament for a ride in which he spent so long behind the falling curtain of water that the crowd looked away, convinced that he had wiped-out, only to issue a roar of disbelief as he emerged from the tube more than 50 metres down the point.

Thompson also racked up scores of 8.33 and 8.27 out of 10 during the same heat, the latter score being discarded in his final tally, to post the event high a heat total of 18.33 out of 20 and take the lead in the Nixon WTA, a specialty award that sees the surfer recording the highest two-wave heat score receiving a custom-made, one-of-a-kind Nixon timepiece valued at around US $10 000!

Day 2 of the Billabong Pro J-Bay started well for the South African contingent when giant-killing wildcard Sean Holmes eliminated Jadson Andre (BRA), the current World No. 4 and the winner of the previous event on the 2010 ASP World Tour in Brazil, in the first heat run. Holmes advanced to a Round 3 clash with top seed Kelly Slater (USA) and can significantly enhance compatriot Smith’s chances of taking over at the top of ASP World Title Race Rankings if he can oust the current World No. 1 who is bidding for an unprecedented 10^th world title this year.

Durban’s Travis Logie then improved his chances of surviving the looming cut in the number of ASP World Tour campaigners from the present 45 to just 32 after the next event in Tahiti when he produced a gutsy come-from-behind victory over Australian Luke Munro. Logie waited patiently while Munro built up his wave-count and then unleashed his trademark lightening fast backhand attack on the best wave of the heat to secure his place in Round 3.

Unfortunately Logie could not repeat the feat in a wave-starved Round 4 match-up and, despite delivering the heat high-score of 8.33, he was overtaken by Adrian ‘Ace’ Buchan (AUS) and eliminated in equal 17^th place overall, earning 1 750 precious ranking points and banking US $6 500.

The remaining 12 heats in Round 3 will see the event top seeds and those who won their opening clashes on Thursday doing battle in waves that are expected to be bigger than today as a new swell from the SSW arrives at Jeffreys Bay. Surfline, the official surf forecasters for the Billabong Pro J-Bay 2010, predict that Saturday morning will start off on the slow side, but a new, medium size south-southwest swell will build over the afternoon/evening, before dropping on Sunday.

Contest director Mike Parsons will make a call at 7am on when to get the event underway with the encounter between Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Tanner Gudauskas (USA) the first to take to the waves.

The Billabong Pro is being held again today. The waves are smaller than yesterday but there is hardly any wind and conditions are good.
Three South Africans will be surfing today in round two, with Jordy Smith safely through to round 3 already. At this stage it looks like contest director Mike Parsons might have the contest all wrapped up by the end of the weekend.

Epic Conditions Witness World's Best Dominate Day 1 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay!!!(Thursday, July 15, 2010)

The 2010 ASP World Tour returned with a vengeance today, bearing witness to Day 1 of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay and the greatest assemblage of surfing talent in history tearing into excellent four-to-six foot (2 metre) waves at the iconic pointbreak.

With clear skies, idyllic surf and the world's greatest surfers on hand, Round 1 of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay saw the 2010 ASP World Title Race reignited with the top seeds putting in sensational performances.

Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, reigning ASP World Champion and two-time past winner of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay (2002, 2006), kick-started his 2010 campaign in fine form today, lacerating the pristine walls of Jeffreys Bay with the highest heat total of the event, a 16.70 out of a possible 20, to advance through to Round 3.

"The conditions changed a bit in our heat and we were slightly out of sorts," Fanning said. "We were all hunting for the barrel because a lot of the previous heats had them, but they didn't pan out for us. After I readjusted to the conditions, I was really focusing on my turns and if a barrel presented itself, I would go from there."

Currently ranked No. 4 in the hunt for the 2010 ASP World Title, Fanning is confident in his ability at Jeffreys Bay and looks to ignite a similar form that saw him steam to world No. 1 in 2009.

"This year, you have to take every heat seriously," Fanning said. "There are so many threats and even the rookies can do damage. I feel like I've been surfing well all year and I'm just focusing on every heat, and hopefully that takes me to a solid result."

Jordy Smith (AUS), 22, current ASP World No. 2, showed the world just why he is the most dangerous man in South Africa, comboing opponents Tom Whitaker (AUS), 30, and Joan Duru (FRA), 21, with a 16.37 out of a possible 20 for an effortless display of forehand power gouges and beautiful tube-riding.

"I think the only kind of pressure that exists is that which I put on myself," Smith said. "Winning last week in Durban was a great feeling, but this is where I love to be and getting to surf firing Jeffreys with only two other guys out is an incredible experience."

Representing South Africa alongside fellow ASP World Tour campaigner Travis Logie (ZAF), 31, Smith enjoyed the full support of the locals today, who broke out their Vuvuzelas to cheer on their countrymen.

"Being No. 2 in the world and in South Africa is an interesting feeling," Smith said. "Obviously I want to get a good result and make my country proud, but all that really isn't on my mind when I'm out there and Jeffreys is firing. All you can think about it surfing your best. Hopefully I can continue the momentum throughout the next few days."

Kelly Slater (USA), 38, former nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1, nearly missed his opening round heat today, suffering a bevy of travel delays only to arrive this morning. Despite the delay, the iconic natural-footer proceeded to put on a Jeffreys Bay clinic, hunting barrel after barrel, blasting off the top and uting carving 360s.

"Everything that could have gone wrong on my trip over here did," Slater said. "My flight got delayed on the East Coast because of storms, and then there were mechanical failures and more delays. I had to overnight in Johannesburg and then my bags didn't show up. I think it took me 40 hours door-to-door and I only arrived this morning. That said, sometimes all that happens for a reason and I ended up having a fun surf there and getting through Round 1."

Currently sitting in the No. 1 spot in the hunt for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title, Slater is firmly in the driver's seat and looking for another solid result at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay.

"They're all important events to get results at but you definitely know when you need to strike," Slater said. "It's approaching the middle part of the year and you definitely don't want to be picking up any throwaways. You want keepers from here on out and Jeffreys has historically been a venue where I can perform."

While the ASP World Title Race took center stage today, coming a close second was the dramatic battle to survive the mid-year cut-off from the ASP Top 45 to 32.

Andy Irons (HAW), 31, former three-time ASP World Champion and past winner of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay (2004), returned from his 2009 sabbatical with a vengeance today, seamlessly threading the barrel and mixing it up with his signature forehand blasts to advance to Round 3 past Jay Thompson (AUS), 27, and Jadson Andre (BRA), 20.

"J-Bay is a special place for me," Irons said. "I've had some of the best results of my career here and I've also had some of the hardest losses. To come back here after taking last year off and to get such amazing surf for Day 1 is a great feeling."

Currently rated No. 23 on the ASP World Title Race rankings, Irons will be looking for a good result in Jeffreys Bay and Tahiti to survive the mid-year field reduction from the ASP Top 45 to the Top 32.

"So happy to get through Round 1 here," Irons said. "At the last event in Brazil, I came there rated 13th, got a 33rd and ped down to 23rd so this is an important event for me. No one is immune from that mid-year cutoff and yeah, it can be stressful."

Nate Yeomans (USA), 28, 2010 ASP World Tour rookie and current ASP World No. 41, secured his first elite tour victory this morning, powerfully dispatching of Bede Durbidge (AUS), 27, and Luke Stedman (AUS), 34, with an impressive 15.83 out of a possible 20.

"I haven't been looking at the ratings this year and just trying to focus on getting through heats," Yeomans said. "I thought I was in the 20s or something, but 40s, wow, that's a ways to go. It's all good though. I've got through that first heat and will just be looking to push harder from here on out."

In his first trip ever to Jeffreys Bay, Yeomans' backhand assault was surgical on the Jeffreys righthanders as the young Californian drove through bottom turns and sliced off top turns.

"The waves today are awesome," Yeomans said. "I've been here about a week and it's been good preparation to sort out boards and try to get myself adjusted to the wave. The surf came up this morning and I saw a friend of mine, Grant Baker, in the lineup who gave me some tips for today. They obviously paid off."

Yeomans led today's rookie class assault on the world's best that saw wins from fellow first-years Adam Melling (AUS), 25, Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 21, and Owen Wright (AUS), 20.

Surfline, official foreers for the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, are calling for a slight decline in surf tomorrow before another pulse fills in on Saturday.

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.

When competition resumes, up first will be Jadson Andre (BRA), 20, up against Sean Holmes (ZAF), 32, in the third heat of the elimination Round 2.

The waiting period for the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay will on Friday, July 15 and run through July 25, 2010.

Yesterday my longtime buddy and co partner in Costa Rica,Yves from livethelife.tv and me went to the surf charity auction organised by Billabong at the St Francis Links in St Francis Bay.

A limited edition boardshorts, signed by the band Metallica and framed will be the main item to be auctioned at the Billabong Golf day being held at St Franics Links on 13 July. The auction and golf day is being held to raise funds for the Supertubes Surfing Foundation (SSF).

The limited edition signed Metallica boardshorts that are going on auction tomorrow @ St Francis Links

Billabong CEO Ernest Bendeman says that only 5 of the signed boardshorts exist in the world and it is a sought after collector’s item. “We also have surfboards donated by Occy, Andy Irons and Taj Burrow to auction off. a painting donated by Bill Odgen depicting Pipeline in Hawaii as well as a Supertubes painting by local artist Martin Bakker will also be on auction.
Well known TV celebrity Marius Roberts will be the auctioneer for the evening and will also be rasing funds for the SSF by selling off Occy Boardshorts as well as a number of accommodation packages donated by local businesses.
