BILLABONG PRO J-BAY 2010 BRINGS WORLD’S BEST SURFERS TO JEFFREYS BAY FOR 25TH YEAR!!!!

Africa’s most prestigious surfing event, the Billabong Pro J-Bay, will bring the world’s top 45 ranked professional surfers to the renowned waves of Jeffreys Bay in July for the 25th time since it became an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) rated event back in 1984.
Scheduled for 15-25 July, Stop No. 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour will again be staged at Supertubes, the 300 metre stretch of coastline universally acknowledged as one of the planet’s top 10 high performance surf breaks.
The stellar field for the 2010 Billabong Pro J-Bay is headed by Kelly Slater (USA) who grabbed the lead on the ASP World Title Race rankings after event No. 3 in Brazil in April. Slater, the only surfer to have his name etched on Billabong Pro J-Bay perpetual trophy four times, will be aiming to ward off the challenge of arguably the most talented group of surfers ever assembled as he bids for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title.
South Africa’s surfing superstar and current ASP No. 2 Jordy Smith heads the chasing pack along with reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning, defending Billabong Pro champion Joel Parkinson and previous event winners Taj Burrow (all Australians) and Andy Irons (HAW).
Add established stars such as 2009 event runner-up Damien Hobgood and fellow American Bobby Martinez, the progressive manoeuvres of Dane Reynolds (USA), the precocious talent of rookies Jadson Andre (BRA) and Owen Wright (AUS) with a host of other top contenders and spectacular surfing performances are guaranteed to light up the waves at Supers.
The 48 man field also includes South Africans Travis Logie and wildcards Sean Holmes (Cape Town) and 19 year-old Shaun Joubert, while the third wildcard will go to the winner of the Von Zipper Super Heat contested by Xcel Pro Showdown winner Ryan Payne, fellow St Francis Bay standout Dale Staples and two rising international stars.
All the action will be covered via webcasts on www.billabongpro.com/jbay10featuring live scoring, video footage with multiple camera angles, slow-motion replays, video on demand highlights of previous heats and interviews accompanied by a choice of expert commentary in English or Portuguese.
This year sees another concerted effort by Billabong to make the Billabong Pro a ‘greener event.’ Following the success of the programs instituted last year, which were recognised by the South African Parliament who passed a motion congratulating the organisers on making environmental conservation a top priority, Billabong will again utilise the immense interest in the event to heighten awareness of local and global surf communities to the challenge of climate change, and how we all need to become part of the solution.
The estimated total carbon footprint of the Billabong Pro is 365 tonnes of CO2, which is the weight equivalent of approximately 240 African elephants. These emissions will be reduced where possible, and the remaining emissions will be offset using United Nations Kyoto compliant carbon credits ensuring that the Billabong Pro is a low carbon, climate-conscious event and that the barrels ridden at Supers are green in more ways than one.
Greening initiatives at the event include using renewable energy, biodegradable food and beverage containers, paper not plastic bags and bio-diesel fuel in all event vehicles alongside an event recycling program. More about climate change and what it means to surfers can be found at www.cleanerclimate.com/billabongpro
The eyes of the surfing world will be firmly fixed on Jeffreys Bay from 15-25 July as hundreds of thousands of surf fans worldwide log millions of page impressions while following the fortunes of their favourite surfers.
For those fortunate enough to attend the Billabong Pro and watch the action live in the natural amphitheatre on the dunes overlooking the liquid runway known as Supertubes, there is also the legendary party atmosphere in J-Bay throughout the event with the details of the live music shows and other entertainment functions currently being compiled. Watch this space.
The 2010 Billabong Pro J-Bay is proudly supported by Eastern Cape Tourism, Virgin Atlantic, Monster Energy, Vida e Caffe, Corona and Tavcor.

J-Bay Surftrips and their clients cant wait for this event to start.....

Jordy Smith Talks J-Bay with TWS
CARLSBAD, California/USA (Monday, June 21, 2010) - Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, current ASP World No. 2, is one of the best Jeffreys Bay surfers of all time. The big South African's preternatural ability and rapport with the icy walls of J-Bay make him one of the most dangerous surfers in the world at the venue, and his current ASP World No. 2 spot has him in striking distance of the ASP World Title Race rankings' lead. Transworld SURF (TWS) recently caught up with the big natural-footer to go over his mindset before the match. This...is their story...

Full video interview at TWS

JBay pulls together to say NO to the Thyspunt Nuclear power station

21/06/10 - 13:41:44PM ~ By Brenton Williams ~

The Jeffreys Bay surf community came out in full support of the Supertubes Surfing Foundation’s call to prevent the building of a nuclear power station at nearby Thuyspunt. 200 – 250 people donned either black or yellow T-shirts and formed a human NO nuke sign on the Supertubes beach, the venue of the annual Billabong Pro surf event.

The protest formed part of International Surfing Day, a worldwide event where surfers from beaches across the planet unite to celebrate the Sport of Kings and highlight issues facing the environment.

The biggest concerns the Jeffreys Bay surf community have regarding the unpalatable prospect of having a nuclear power station on their doorstep are not hard to understand.
During construction of the nuclear station, an unprecedented amount of sand will be pumped into the ocean that will cause a layer of sediment 10 – 15 cm deep. The Environmental Impact Studies (EIA) readily acknowledges that the sediment will have an impact on the reefs in the vicinity.

Furthermore the sediment will have an adverse affect on the breeding grounds of the squid at Thuyspunt and will lead to the demise of the R 500 million industry in the area. Many surfers are fisherman whose jobs will simply be lost if the power station is built.
The social impact will also be devastating to Jeffreys Bay, which is already battling to cope with a high crime rate and people who are waiting for houses to be built and to receive other basic services.

The Supertubes Surfing Foundation is concerned that a mass influx of jobless people seeking work will cause house breakings to escalate and put the Jeffreys Bay Police under even more pressure. This point is also mentioned in the Impact Study which also acknowledges that an increase in alcohol abuse, drug abuse and HIV will also occur in the area. This is simply unacceptable as Eskom will not take responsibly for the looming social disaster that is waiting for Jeffreys Bay.

The Jeffreys Bay surf community will be joining others in a protest march on 17 July to coincide with the Billabong Pro to again voice their dissatisfaction with Eskom’s decision to make Thuyspunt a preferred site for a nuclear power station.  With all the international media crews in the town for the Billabong Pro, the march is sure to receive worldwide coverage.

The message is clear from the surf community in Jeffreys Bay and is supported by surfers from all over the world. Don’t build a Nuke at Thuyspunt.

J-Bay Surftrips supports this protest 100 procent!!!!No nukes in J-Bay!!!!
