bloodscan_smThe inaugural Jeffrey’s Bay Surf Challenge presented by BloodScan is a three-day surfing event that is set to take place on 28-30 April at The Point, Jeffrey’s Bay. The tournament is an open event, incorporating 5 divisions, namely – Open Men’s, U20 Boys, U20 Girls, U14 Boys and U14 Girls. BloodScan has put up a total prize pool of R74,000 - with all finalists in all divisions receiving cash prizes. The first prize for the Open Division is R15,000.

The Open Division also serves as the South African Surf Industry Cup which promises to be an exciting component of the event, with brand team riders accumulating points for their team whilst competing in the main event, all vying for the coveted Industry Cup. The silverware was last won by Billabong in 2003. The industry has embraced this event, and a number of former World Tour professionals are already confirmed for the event. Each Surf Industry team will consist of four members comprising three surfers and one person who works for the relevant brand, which will help to even out the teams and make sure that there is a fun element in the event.

Teams who have already confirmed so far are Billabong, VonZipper, Zigzag Surfing Magazine, Rip Curl, Oakley, Quiksilver, Lizzard, Bomb Surf, RVCA, Nixon, Hurley and Firewire. All comprise very good surfers and there will be some exciting surfing, as well as some good old rivalries to keep the action going. Surfing South Africa has fielded the Eastern Cape Development Team as well, which will add to the excitement.

Oakley is one brand that have fielded a solid team that could easily walk away with the cup. Greg Emslie, Davey Weare, Royden Bryson and Chappy Adshade make up a formidable team with years of cut-throat World Tour competitive experience behind them. "Oakley is stoked to be part of such an awesome contest as the Jeffrey's Bay Surf Challenge, and with our solid talent pool between surfers and employees, we will hopefully put together a winning combination," said Oakley's Greg Emslie. "Point in Jeffrey's Bay is a fun, rippable wave, so I think the event will be a huge success and will bring the South African surfing community together."

Historically, April is a good time for surf in the Eastern Cape, and hopes are high that there will be some good waves for the contest.

The event is sponsored by BloodScan, and will be raising much-needed funds for the Supertubes Surfing Foundation. The Foundation has been preserving the waves and beaches of Jeffrey’s Bay since 1999. The Supertubes Surfing Foundation is a joint venture between the local surf clubs and the surf industry in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Event co-sponsors are Black Label, Sector9, Element and EP Skydivers. Red Bull will be supplying the energy for all contestants.
