SAFETY

Jeffreys Bay is a small and usually a quiet holiday town with a very good security record but like around the world, crime does exist in South Africa, and in Jeffreys Bay. So it is better to take a few precautions:
· All valuables, passports, cameras, etc. should be locked in a safe place.
· Valuables should be carried discreetly when walking in cities, as thieves can spot tourists from a

mile away.
·
Most crime occurs in the township settlements where people live in extreme poverty. If you want to
visit these townships we recommend to take a guided tour. Walking through a township on your

own, especially as a tourist, can be very dangerous
· It is also better to not walk outside after dark, even for short distances. If you do decide to go out,

taxis are very cheap and safe.

ELECTRICITY

The electricity supply is 220/230 volts AC 50 HZ. Most plugs have 3-pin or 2-pin. Adaptors can be purchased, but may be in short supply. US-made appliances may need a transformer. Most accommodations have 110-volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances.

HEALTH

Malaria is found only in the Lowveld of Mpumalanga (incl. the Kruger National Park) Limpopo and on the Maputaland coast of KwaZulu-Natal. If you do not tend to visit these areas, no precautions are necessary. Jeffreys Bay, as the rest of the Eastern Cape is malaria-free.
Medical facilities equal the best in the world and in many aspects of the medical field. South Africa is a global leader on many medical fronts. A large network of Government, Provincial and private hospitals offer excellent service. Make sure you have adequate health insurance.

FOOD & WATER

South Africa’s tap water is one of the safest and cleanest in the world. In hotels, restaurants and nightspots, the standards of hygiene and food preparation are generally high. It is safe to eat fresh fruit and salads and to put as much ice as you like in your drinks - a good thing, too, after a day on the beach or in the bush. Restaurants cover a wide variety of cuisines and visitors are normally very impressed with the food. The country’s diverse culture makes for varied traditional foods, which is worth exploring.
