Madiba, the father of the nation, passed away at 8.50pm at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg on Thursday.
As President Jacob Zuma made the announcement during a live televised address, the nation stood still in silence.
Special broadcasts have been airing on radio and television and news websites have begun paying tribute to Madiba.
Condolences have begun to pour in from all corners of the world, especially on social media networks.
South Africa is in mourning as our greatest son passes on.
Nelson Mandela quotes:
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

“Since my release, I have become more convinced than ever that the real makers of history are the ordinary men and women of our country. Their participation in every decision about the future is the only guarantee of true democracy and freedom.”
(Address at a rally in Durban, 25 February 1990).
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite”.
